How Much Does a New Driveway Cost in Dublin in 2026?

If you've searched this question, you've probably already found a range of figures across various driveway contractor websites — and found them frustrating. Some say "from €70 per m²," others say "from €100 per m²," and neither figure tells you what you actually need to know.

Here's why those numbers are essentially useless, and what you should do instead.

Why Published Prices Don't Work for Driveways

Driveway installation is a bespoke trade. Consider two properties, both in Dublin, both wanting a 50 sqm block paved driveway:

Property A: Ground conditions are good, compacted solid clay, no drainage issues. Previous surface is old tarmac in reasonable condition. Easy access for a mini-digger. Standard block chosen.

Property B: Ground is soft — made-up ground from when the estate was built. Existing concrete is thick and difficult to break out. Drainage is required because the drive slopes to the road. Premium tumbled block chosen. Steps required at the garage entrance.

These two jobs involve dramatically different amounts of work, material, and machinery time. The cost per square metre is meaningless as a comparison because the total project content is so different.

A contractor who publishes "from €80 per m²" is either: (a) Quoting for Property A conditions and hoping Property B customers don't notice the extras when the final invoice arrives, or (b) Quoting for Property B conditions, in which case Property A customers think they're expensive.

Neither is helpful. And both create the conditions for the disputed invoices and disappointed customers that give some parts of this trade a bad name.

What Actually Drives the Cost of a New Driveway

Size: The total square metres is the starting point. Larger areas have lower unit costs because fixed costs (mobilisation, machinery) are spread.

Existing surface removal: Breaking out and disposing of old concrete, tarmac, or block paving costs money — and the type of material matters. Thick reinforced concrete is harder and more expensive to remove than old tarmac.

Sub-base: The foundation beneath the surface. The depth required depends on ground conditions. Soft or waterlogged ground needs deeper sub-base work. This is assessed at the site survey.

Drainage: What drainage is required, if any. A simple fall to a lawn needs nothing. A soakaway or channel drain system adds cost.

Surface material: Block paving, tarmac, resin, and natural stone all have different material costs. Within block paving alone, the range between a standard block and a premium tumbled block is significant when multiplied across a full driveway.

Pattern and complexity: Herringbone is standard. Circular features, intricate multi-colour patterns, and numerous cuts take more time.

Edging and kerbing: The specification of the perimeter edging varies.

Steps and levels: Multiple levels or steps add significant work.

Access: Restricted sites require more hand work.

What You Should Do Instead

Get a free site survey. We come to your property, assess every one of the above factors, measure the area, discuss your material options, and give you a written quote within 24 hours. The quote covers every element of the job — no hidden extras.

The survey takes 20–30 minutes. There's no charge for it, and there's no obligation to proceed if you don't like what you see.

That's the only way to get a price that actually means something for your specific project.

See our cost guides for a detailed breakdown of what affects the cost of each specific driveway type.
