Patio Installation Dublin — Natural Stone, Porcelain and Block Paving

Natural stone, porcelain, block and poured concrete patios designed for Irish conditions.

A well-built patio is one of the most-used parts of a Dublin home's outdoor space. The problem is that most patios in Ireland are laid too thin, on an inadequate base, with jointing that lets in water and weeds within two seasons. We see the results of rushed patio installations regularly — flagstones rocking, joints full of moss, water lying where it shouldn't.

At Driveways and Patios we install patios that actually last, using materials suitable for the Irish climate and jointing that holds. We work with Indian sandstone (cleaned and treated), porcelain (increasingly popular for its low maintenance), natural granite and limestone, and block paving for more informal garden areas. Every patio is laid on a properly prepared bed with correct falls for drainage — a sloped patio that clears water is far more useful than a flat one with puddles.

We survey every job, discuss materials and layout, and deliver a written quote within 24 hours. No deposit required, written guarantee included.

Materials and Options

Indian sandstone

Natural riven-surface sandstone with warm buff, golden or grey tones. Popular on traditional gardens. Needs sealing on installation and periodic re-sealing. Porosity varies — we specify suitable grades for Irish conditions.

Porcelain paving

Dense, low-porosity tiles in large formats (600×900mm, 900×900mm common). Available in stone, slate and concrete effects. Very low maintenance, frost-resistant, and doesn't need sealing. Heavier to install but excellent long-term performance.

Granite

The toughest natural stone available. Granite setts and slabs are extremely durable, suit both contemporary and traditional homes, and weather gracefully.

Limestone

Softer than granite, lighter in colour. Works well on sunny south-facing gardens but needs sealing and care in shaded or damp situations.

Block paving

For informal patio areas or integrated driveways and patios using the same material throughout. Flexible, repairable, available in wide colour range.

Our Installation Process

  1. 1

    Survey and design

We visit the site, assess the existing garden levels, discuss materials and layout options, and measure up.

  2. 2

    Excavation

Garden topsoil and any existing surface is removed. We excavate to the depth required for the sub-base and bed.

  3. 3

    Sub-base

A compacted layer of MOT Type 1 stone, typically 100–150mm, is laid as the structural base.

  4. 4

    Mortar bed

A semi-dry mortar mix is laid and levelled at the correct falls (minimum 1:80 gradient away from the house) before the flags or tiles are set.

  5. 5

    Paving installation

Flags, tiles or blocks are laid, checked for level, and adjusted. Porcelain requires full bed adhesion with appropriate adhesive — not the same as sandstone laying.

  6. 6

    Jointing

Once the mortar has cured (24–48 hours), the joints are pointed with a suitable compound. For sandstone, traditional mortar pointing. For porcelain, flexible epoxy grout or proprietary pointing compound.

  7. 7

    Handover

Site cleaned up, waste removed, sealing applied if required, written guarantee issued.
