Block Paving vs Concrete Driveway
Block paving and poured concrete are both durable, long-lasting driveway surfaces, but they behave very differently. Here's how they compare for a Dublin home.
| | Block Paving | Concrete | |---|---|---| | Cost | Higher | Plain concrete often lower | | Surface | Individual blocks | Continuous slab | | Repairs | Lift and relay blocks | Hard to repair invisibly | | Drainage | Permeable options available | Not permeable | | Cracking | Won't crack as a slab | Possible without proper joints | | Design options | Many colours and patterns | Plain, exposed aggregate or imprinted | | Lifespan | 20–30 years | 30+ years |
Cost
Plain concrete is often the more economical option to install. Block paving costs more, but offers more design flexibility and — importantly — easier repairs. Imprinted concrete sits between the two, achieving a decorative finish for less than real block paving.
Repairs and flexibility
Block paving's modular nature is its biggest advantage. Blocks can be lifted and relaid for repairs, settlement or utility access with no visible scar. Concrete is a continuous slab — strong, but if it cracks or a section needs access, repairs are difficult to disguise.
Drainage
Block paving can be laid as a permeable surface, or graded to a soakaway, which helps meet the Irish requirement that front-driveway surface water doesn't run onto the road. Concrete is not permeable, so it needs falls and drainage (a channel drain or soakaway) designed in.
Cracking
Concrete moves with temperature and relies on correctly placed expansion and control joints to avoid cracking — the most common failure in poorly laid concrete drives. Block paving is flexible and won't crack as a slab. With both, the sub-base underneath is what really determines longevity.
Which should you choose?
Choose concrete for a hard-wearing, continuous surface at a competitive price, accepting the harder repairs. Choose block paving for design choice, permeable drainage options and easy, invisible repairs.
