Resin-Bound vs Resin-Bonded: Don't Confuse Them
These two terms are used interchangeably all the time, but they describe genuinely different products. If you're getting quotes for a resin driveway in Dublin, knowing the difference protects you from paying premium money for the cheaper system.

Resin-bound — the premium system
With resin-bound, the decorative aggregate is fully mixed with resin in a forced-action mixer, then trowelled by hand to a smooth, seamless surface. Because the stones are coated and bound throughout with gaps between them, the finished surface is fully permeable — water drains straight through. This is the system worth paying for: smooth underfoot, no loose stones, minimal weeds, and it satisfies Irish planning requirements for front driveways without separate drainage.
Resin-bonded — the cheaper process
With resin-bonded, resin is applied to the base and loose stone is scattered on top, sticking only where it lands. The result is a rougher, textured surface that is not permeable and tends to shed stones over time as the surface bond wears. It can be useful for grip on ramps and steps, but as a driveway surface it doesn't offer the drainage or longevity of resin-bound.
Why the difference matters
The two are often quoted under the same "resin driveway" heading at very different prices. If you're comparing quotes, ask explicitly which system is being offered. For a driveway, resin-bound is almost always the right choice — it's permeable, durable and low-maintenance.
