Resin vs Tarmac: The Honest Comparison

Resin-bound and tarmac are two of the most common driveway surfaces we install across Dublin, and homeowners often weigh them against each other. They suit different priorities. Here is a straight comparison so you can decide which is right for your home.

| | Resin-Bound | Tarmac | |---|---|---| | Cost | Higher | Lower — often the cheapest | | Installation speed | 1–2 days (plus base) | 1–2 days | | Drainage | Fully permeable | Not permeable | | Planning (front drive) | Usually exempt | May need drainage measures | | Appearance | Smooth, decorative, many colours | Uniform black, red or tar-and-chip | | Maintenance | Very low | Low | | Lifespan | 15–25 years | 20–30 years | | Repairs | Patch repairs possible | Easy to patch |

Cost

Tarmac is usually the more affordable option per square metre and is hard to beat on larger driveways where value matters. Resin-bound costs more because of the resin system and the base it needs — but it buys you a higher-end finish and built-in drainage. Neither has a meaningful fixed price online; the figure depends on your ground, the existing surface and drainage.

Drainage and planning

This is the biggest practical difference. Resin-bound is fully permeable — rainwater drains straight through it, which satisfies the Irish requirement that surface water from a front driveway doesn't run onto the public road, usually without any separate drainage. Tarmac is not permeable, so a tarmac front driveway needs falls, a channel drain or a soakaway designed in to stay compliant. In our wet climate, that drainage detail matters.

Appearance

Resin-bound offers a smooth, seamless finish in a wide range of natural aggregate colours, which suits modern and high-end homes. Tarmac gives a clean, uniform look in black or red, or a textured rustic finish as tar-and-chip. If looks are a priority, resin generally wins; if you want a clean, practical, cost-effective surface, tarmac does the job.

Maintenance and lifespan

Both are low-maintenance. Resin-bound has no joints for weeds and just needs an occasional wash. Tarmac benefits from periodic sealing to keep its colour and resist fuel spills. Tarmac typically lasts a little longer (20–30 years vs 15–25 for resin), though both depend entirely on the sub-base beneath them.

Which should you choose?

Choose tarmac if budget and durability are your priorities, especially on a larger driveway. Choose resin-bound if you want a premium, decorative, low-maintenance surface with drainage built in. Whichever you lean toward, the groundwork decides how long it lasts — so the installer matters as much as the surface.
